The sorcerer Merlin retrieves Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake for Uther Pendragon. With it, Uther forges a brief alliance with Gorlois, the Duke of Cornwall, but his lust for Igrayne, Cornwall's wife, soon ruins the truce. Merlin agrees to help Uther seduce Igrayne on the condition that Uther gives him whatever results from his desire. Merlin transforms Uther into Cornwall's likeness with the Charm of Creation. Morgana, Cornwall's daughter, senses her father's death during an attack on Uther's camp. Igrayne is deceived by the disguise, and Uther impregnates her. Only the devastated Morgana knows the truth, and she hates Merlin and Arthur from then on. Nine months later, Merlin kidnaps Uther's son, Arthur. Uther pursues him, but Gorlois's knights mortally wound him. Uther plunges Excalibur into a stone, and Merlin proclaims: "Whoever pulls the sword from the stone will be king."
