Slide an envelope or memo into the slot and the floating barrel will take hold of it by wedging action and simple gravity. Notes can be removed by sliding them sideways or by lifting the barrel with your finger. I use it to accumulate outgoing mail near a door where I will see it when I leave home each morning.
