Custom guitar pick. Made entirely using (get ready for it): MS Paint Inkscape Tinkercad Intimidated by 3D printing? Why?! Hey, there are a lot of different ways to learn about modeling for 3D printing. You could take a programmer's approach, a graphic artist's approach, even an architect's or video game artist's approach. You might even already have experience in something that gets you an inherent step or more closer to 3D modeling for 3D printers. This model was even made starting with only a beginner's experience in MS Paint! If you are new to 3D print modeling and want to try an exercise, try making your own version of my guitar pick with your own custom graphic, or try modeling your own guitar pick. There are tutorials and websites online that even cater to completely new users to 3D print modeling, feel free to try different ways of designing your model using different software and techniques. If you want to recreate my entirely wonky steps, try this: 1. Open up MS Paint or a comparably crappy image editing program. 2. Create a simple unique 2-color graphic. By 2-color, I don't mean black and white shading. I mean 2 colors, shades and all. I used solid black to make an image on a solid white background. If I had added another color, we would be working with 3 colors and we don't want that for this exercise. 3. Save as .PNG. 4. Open Inkscape (free), open the .PNG you just saved. Click on the image after the default embed option, click Path, click Trace bitmap. Select color quantization and start updating the preview at 2 colors working your way up only until your image shows in the preview pane as 2 solid colors. You might have to invert the image to get your image to show in the foreground color instead of the background color. Save as an .SVG file. 5. Go to Tinkercad.com and import the .SVG. Now you can resize it, place it on objects, turn it into a negative hole space, and group it with other objects. Upload it to Thingiverse or another thing-sharing service. There are even easier ways to get a 3d model modeled up, but this is one way that makes it really easy to give depth to basic 2D images. If you toy around with this exercise and like it, try finding more difficult exercises using other methods.
