Mexico City's first skyscraper, the Torre Latinoamericana! *Updated in 2021 with more detail*. At 188 meters (597 ft) tall and 44 stories, the Torre Latinoamericana (Latinoamerican Tower) was the first skyscraper to be successfully built on a highly-seismic location when it opened in 1956 in downtown Mexico City, very close to other notable landmarks like Palacio de Bellas Artes and a few blocks from Zócalo. The name comes from the Seguros Latinoamericana insurance company, headquartered in the building. It was designed by architect Augusto H. Álvarez.
