This sculpture illustrates a text from the Bible, which is inscribed on the base (not in this representation): "The Master is come, and calleth for thee" (John 11:28). Mary and Martha of Bethany were mourning the death of their brother Lazarus. Jesus came to their house and Martha went to meet him. The sculpture shows the moment when Martha returns inside the house to find her sister. Mary when leads Jesus to the grave of Lazarus, where Jesus raises his corpse to life.
