Born in Leptis Magna (Libya), he fouded the Severan dynasty and ruled as emperor from 193 to 211. He married a Syran princess, Julia Domna. A warrior at heart, he led numerous military campaigns. ROman historians describe him as highly charismatic, implacable wi9trh his foes and even escessively cruel, yet they also note that he rendered a great service to the state.
