This portrait is variously interpreted as either that of the Epicurean philosopher Hermarcus (3rd century B.C.) or of the Greek philosopher Democritus (460-370 B.C.). The work is a 2nd century A.D., Hadrianic rendition of a prototype of the 4th century B.C.
