St George is a completely legendary saint. He is the embodiement of the chivalrous ideal, and therefore is often represented on his horse, armour-clad. He is most famous for his battle against a dragon to free a princess, which he won with the help of Jesus - the battle represents the victory of Faith upon Evil. On this relief, as in most representations of St George, he is defeating the dragon on his horse, and the princess can be distinguished in the background, her hands joined in prayer.
