These scenic masks relate to the main theatre genres: tragedy, comedy and satirical drama. The god of theatre, Dionysus (Bacchus in Roman mythology), was often presented in the form of a simple bearded mask fastened to a draped pillar. He is the masked god, and one of the rare divinities granted immortality.
