Teodors Zaļkalns was one of the first professional Latvian sculptors. Professor of the Latvian Academy of Art and Head of the Sculpture Department (1944-1958). His sculptures had a significant influence on the development of all Latvian sculptural sectors, he was one of the first to turn to the granite sculpture and to stabilize the stylistic principles of granite sculpture. He also commented on the concepts of the most important principles of plastic art ("Sculpture Essential", published in the journal "Art", 1965, 4).
