This is a portrait of Alesso di Luca, a relatively average pharmacist, as the inscription on the base of the piece suggests. His hairstyle and garments are characteristic of ancient Rome portraiture, but many professionals (statesmen, bankers, etc.) in 15th century Florence liked to be portrayed in such anachronistic styles.
