Waddesdon Manor is home to a world-renowned collection of Sèvres porcelain. After the commodification of Chinese porcelain by Johann Friedrich Böttger in the 18th Century, the artform became one of the most valuable commodities across Europe. Böttger was first to introduce 'true' porcelain to Europe, though soft paste porcelain was produced at Chantilly, St Cloud and Vincennes from 1738. The factory of Vincennes, procuding fine porcelain for the royal family (Manufacture royale), was soon moved to Sèvres where the factory quickly developed its own unique forms and decoration. Many variants came from the Sèvres factories, as the painters and gilders were given permission to add a 'mark' on pieces they worked on in order to identify themselves.
