The wide head, the cleft in the chin and the sideburns recall Roman portraits from the time of Nero. The poplar wreath indicates, however, that this is the hero Herakles (also Hercules). The silver poplar was the tree of Herakles, and those who sacrificed to him wore poplar wreaths as well.
