John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist and painter. Renowned for his illustrations and studies of all types of American birds in their natural habitats. This major work, The Bird of America, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. In producing this book, Audubon identified 25 new species.
