This Phrenological glazed head is from the seventh edition "Combe's Elements", 1850. Each number correlates with a believed sentiment or personality to reflect the underlying brain functions, which are all noted on the back of this bust. From the shape of the head it was believe that someone's personality characteristics could be identified. George Combe was a Scottish lawyer and the leader and spokesman of the phrenological movement for more than twenty years. he founded the Edinburgh Phrenological Society in 1820 and was the author of the highly influential 'The Constitution of Man' (1828).
