At the age of nineteen, Ramsay Macdonald left his native town of Lossiemouth for Briston, where he came into contact with the socialist movements that shaped his life. He supported the Independent Labour Party, formed in 1893, and later became Secretary and leader of the Labour Party. In 1924 Macdonald became prime minister of Britain's first Labour government. He was premier again between 1929 and 1935
