While African heroes are almost always portrayed as "heroic," as if their superhuman deeds would leave them unchallenged, the suffering of Jesus that leads to his death and resurrection is a central tenet for Christians. The musculature of Leinberher's Christ, who had never before been portrayed in such a Herculean form, palpably demonstrates the doctrine of the Incarnation: God becoming human in Christ.
