This sculpture is a Madonna carved relief. A Madonna is a representation of Mary, either alone or with her child Jesus. The relief depicts the Virgin holding the Child torso-portrait. The Virgin is depicted in the eleusa pose, a type of depiction of the Virgin Mary in icons in which the infant Jesus Christ is nestled against her cheek. In the Western church the type is often known as the Virgin of Tenderness.
