Following is the shaft and base of a rotary encoder. A rotary encoder, also called a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft or axle to analog or digital output signals. The shaft fits on the motor and is supported by the encoder base and the encoder sits on the encoder base which then measures the angular position of the piston in the motor.
