This portrait statue of Marcus Nonius Balbus depicts the politician and benefactor naked as a hero. The idealised nature of the work, an athletic body with a head of an older person, was common in ancient depictions as to emphasize someone's power or wealth. The marble work was discovered in the theatre of Herculaneum, carved in the last quarter of the 1st Century BC
