He speaks better than many officers, stands straighter than is really necessary, and has an irritating habit of looking composed in conditions that leave everyone else damp, filthy, and one cold meal away from mutiny. At first glance he can seem like the sort better suited to staff work or parades rather than trenchwork. That impression usually lasts until the shooting starts. Vael is ambitious but not soft. He drills his rhyflers hard and keeps their uniforms and equipment from slipping entirely into disgrace. He believes appearance matters because decay never stays in a muddy coat or a neglected rifle. It soon creeps into discipline, then morale, and then the spirit of the whole regiment. He is sharp with subordinates, careful with superiors, and always seems to understand exactly how far he can push both. Vael wants victory, wants advancement, and wants his name to carry weight beyond whatever wet ruin he happens to be standing in today. The useful thing, for the quar under him, is that he knows those goals are best reached by keeping them alive long enough to help him earn them. Syrnol Briegan Toll, Tok - 237th Guards Regiment Syrnol Briegan Toll is a quar of Tok, and carries all the hard polish The eastern Crusade tends to hammer into its officers. He is considered severe, and never seems entirely at rest. He gives orders plainly, expects them followed at once, and has very little patience for excuses, ornament, or comfort. His rhyflers do not generally love him, but they trust that he knows how to get his regiment through a bad patch of ground with some portion of it still standing afterward. Toll believes discipline is a kindness and has a habit of putting himself where the ground is worst, not from love of glory but from a stubborn conviction that a Syrnol has no right to demand steadiness from others while sheltering his own hide. To Toll, that is not heroism but simply what a Syrnol is for.
