Serving as a funerary piece, the stele is inscribed with text identifying Lisandra, translating to "the people (honors) Lisandra daughter of Artemidoros wife of Phaneias". In the stele, Lisandra, represented here as taller than the other characters, stands with a young nurse holding a child in one arm and a small girl in her other hand. The stele is from the Hellenistic period, the second half of the 2nd century B.C. from the area of Asia Minor, potentially the coastal city of Smyrna (known now as the Turkish city of İzmir). The relief belonged to Giovanni Grimani, who in 1587 gave the Republic of Venice much of his private collection of ancient sculptures, following the footsteps of his uncle, the cardinal Domenico Grimani.
