Maude had never been one of the pretty girls, as her mother kept reminding her. She had other qualities, though. She was able to lift a grown pig at the age of six, for example, which was held in high regards in the farmer's village she grew up in. As she approached womanhood, her mother found a suitable husband for her: a kind man, well respected and with a decently sized farm. More than a girl of her looks could hope for, she was told. He was gentle and sweet and... dull. And SO old. Maude ran away on the night before the wedding. As a lonely lass of 16 (albeit the size and weight of a grown bear) she survived on her own in the countryside until chance and maybe fate had her meet Lady Jocelyn de Guisseny, the daughter of a powerful lord with a story not unlike hers. The two bonded and Jocelyn, tired of lonely travels, took Maude as her squire. A female knight with a female squire had been unheard of and raised some eyebrows, but the duo managed to get by and eventually ended up in the company of Count Ademar de Bouronne, who led them to the cursed City of Sorrows...
