"Madame Mere" (Letizia Ramolino), Cast from a Neoclassical sculpture now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth, England. The Italian sculptor has here represented the mother of Napoleon, attired in the Grecian costume that expresses the greatest majesty. The head is slightly turned to the left, with an air of sweetness and composure, and the left arm rests with negligent dignity on the back part of the seat, while the right holds gracefully the collected folds of her flowing mantle. The feet and the hands are exquisitely sculpted. The freshness of youth has yielded up its rights and given place to the matronly aspect of mature years. It is serene, yet slightly animated by some lofty and gratifying idea which seems entirely to occupy her mind.
