Do away with the rubber bands and use this simple piece to keep your tongs closed. It fits snug on the tong so it stays in place if it is open and at the end of the tong or in the middle of the tongs to keep it closed. This is made of TPU so if you are going to put it in the dish washer simply slide it off the end and replace after washing, Enjoy!
