Model Description:This download contains a highly detailed model of a Panzer II AusF a, a pre-production version of the Panzer II. Documentation and references for the real vehicle were rigorously studied to make the model as geometrically accurate as possible, except in the cases where printability would have to be sacrificed (such as the fender thickness). Historical Description:The Panzer II was originally designed as a stopgap tank for the German army during World War 2, meant to tie over panzer divisions while larger tanks were being developed. The vehicle was the most prevalent German tank at the beginning of the war; however, it would be replaced by the Panzer III and IV tanks shortly after. By 1942 the vehicle was almost entirely taken out of frontline service. The vehicle generally had lackluster armor, as at the time of its development resistance to small arms was the biggest consideration. All Panzer II variants mounted a 20mm autocannon of some variety, with earlier models using the KwK 30, while later versions upgraded to the KwK 38. The Panzer II AusF a was the first pre-production model of the vehicle (pre-production identifiable by the lowercase 'a'). This version was produced between 1936 and 1937 with 75 being built. The vehicle's suspension varied notably from the later production version seen on the c, A,B,C, and F variants of the vehicle. The chassis was somewhat shorter, however was visually similar to later versions. The lower front plate was rounded rather than the flat plates found on production versions. In Armored Advance:In armored advance the Panzer II AusF a is a cheap anti-infantry unit, with very limiting anti-tank utility. The vehicle's armor will not stop much, nor will the cannon damage much. It is however, very potent at knocking out unarmored units with the 20mm autocannon.
