Sainte Maure, a brilliant military leader and governor of several provinces, remained royal to King Louis XIV during Fronde rebellion, and became tutor to his son, the Dauphin. He was known as a writer of madrigals (courtly poems) and frequented the literary salons at the Hotel Rambouillet in Paris.
