Known from fossil remains found in what is now North America, this species is especially famous for its bizarre dorsal fin. Adult males possessed a large, flat, anvil-shaped spine covered in rough denticles, possibly used for display, mating, or intimidation. Unlike modern sharks, Stethacanthus altonensis had a compact body and broad pectoral fins, suggesting agile movement in shallow marine environments.
