The word dai mean large and thename is apt because this game uses twice asmany pieces as Hasami Shogi, 18 per playerplaced initially on the two back rows nearestthe player controlling those pieces. The twosides are called sente ["black"] and gote["white"], as in shogi, with sente moving first.Traditionally, Go-stones are used for thepieces. The object of the game is to capture all of anopponents' pieces or to have captured morepieces than one's opponent if a situationarises in which additional captures are nolonger possible. All pieces move like rooks ischess, i.e., in any uninterrupted vertical orhorizontal line in any obstructed directionwithout jumping. Pieces are taken bycustodial capture, i.e., when an enemy piecebecomes horizontally or vertically sandwichesbetween two of a player's own pieces. One ofthe two pieces bracketing the capturedpiece must be moved in order to capture butmultiple simultaneous captured are allowed.
