Alongside the four brave Battle Hippos, one opportunistic oxpecker happened to be cleaning the right set of tusks at the right time and mutated alongside the soon-to-be-heroes. Quickly fearing irrelevance, Master Feather conned himself into a position of leadership over the Battle Hippos, providing sage advice, spiritual leadership, and, yes, still cleaning bits of food from their teeth from time to time - a bird's gotta eat.
