The apothecary vessel made of tin dates back to the 18th century. The vessel is engraved with a Baroque cartouche crowned with a cross, the surface of which bears an inscription indicating its contents: COBALTUM.Cobaltum is the Latin term for cobalt, a metal discovered in 1735 by Swedish chemist Georg Brandt (1694–1768). According to legend, the name derives from the name of a mischievous dwarf – Kobold, who was accused of planting then-worthless cobalt in place of the desired iron. Before the discovery of metallic cobalt, its compounds were already known. Smalt (cobalt-potassium silicate) was used as a dye for glass and to color enamels applied to glass or porcelain. It was also once commonly used as a pigment for paints.Cobaltum metallicumwas used only in homeopathy. Cobalt preparation was used to treat weakness and pain, as well as constant mood changes and decreased sexual desire.
