Model of the Danish medieval hero Esbern Snarre, he was foster brother to the Danish King Valdemar the Great. Esbern Snare, also known as Esbern the Resolute, was a høvding, or chieftain, royal chancellor and crusader. His family were members of the powerful Hvide clan.
