Initial designs began in 1937, with the first prototype flying in 1942. The DFS 230 A, distinguished by its shorter wingspan compared to later variants, measured 16.2 meters (53 ft 2 in) in length and boasted a 24-meter (78 ft 7 in) wingspan.Primarily employed on the Eastern Front and during Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the DFS 230 A carried a crew of two and up to 14 fully equipped paratroopers or approximately 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) of cargo. Towed into the air by aircraft like the Junkers Ju 52, it demonstrated surprising maneuverability despite its size. While not without losses, the glider proved effective in its intended role, contributing to airborne operations across various theaters.The DFS 230’s design significantly influenced subsequent glider development, both in Germany and internationally, establishing key principles in glider aerodynamics and structural engineering.
