The British No 80 White Phosphorus (WP) smoke grenade, used extensively from 1944, is a WWII-era hand grenade designed for creating instant, dense smoke screens. Consisting of a tinned metal canister containing white phosphorus, it bursts 2.5 to 4 seconds after activation, scattering phosphorus that ignites upon air contact. Note this was also used as the smoke grenade for the British Ferret scout car
