F-35 Lightning II is the United States' newest fighter, developed and produced by Lockheed Martin. The F-35 is a 5th Gen multirole stealth fighter, resulting from the Joint Strike Fighter program. The JSF program aimed at providing an airframe that could fulfill the roles of the F-16, A-10, F/A-18, and AV-8B. Instead of one aircraft, three different variants share a similar airframe. The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) with an internal GAU-22 Gatling cannon entering service in the USAF on August 2, 2016. The F-35B is the Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) variant. Lacking an internal gun, it entered service in the USMC on July 31, 2015. The F-35C is the carrier-based variant, with a stronger arrester hook, more robust landing gear, larger wings, and the highest fuel capacity of the three.
