Established in 1920 by Désiré Ingouf, the café gained notoriety during the Battle of Normandy in June 1944. Situated directly in the path of the American 101st Airborne Division’s advance, the building became a crucial defensive position for German forces during intense fighting from June 6th to 7th. The café’s thick stone walls and strategic location provided cover for German machine gunners, making it a significant obstacle for the advancing Americans.Throughout the battle, the Café Désiré Ingouf endured relentless bombardment from American artillery and aerial attacks. Despite the damage, the building remained stubbornly occupied, becoming a symbol of German resistance. The fighting around the café was exceptionally brutal, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. Following the American victory in Carentan, the Café Désiré Ingouf served as a makeshift aid station and command post. Today, the café stands as a preserved historical site, a tangible reminder of the fierce combat that shaped the liberation of Normandy and a testament to the resilience of both the building and the town of Carentan.
