About this 3D model
After a lot of iterations, trial and error I present the Foldable Ruler! Model specs: Dimensions - 200x30x3 mm when folded; 400x15x3 mm when unfolded, meaning it can measure up to 40 cm; Weight - 18 g. This design features a compliant locking mechanism as well as a print in place hinge. Furthermore, the two haves of the ruler fit into each other perfectly to prevent deformation under light loads (see the last photo). It was printed with standard PLA on an Ender 3 v2 neo. I used Cura slicer's default settings with the 0.2 mm layer height quality setting, all I changed was printing in 100% infill (IMPORTANT (otherwise the hinge breaks ._. )). I also tried printing it with 0.12 mm layer height, but my printer just isn't tuned well enough to consistently get quality prints at such high detail. If you'd like to try it, give it a shot, though from what I can see the difference isn't all that noticeable. Having tried drawing lines with it i can confidently say that drawing across the hinge doesn't cause any problems whatsoever, the line comes out as straight as can be. Note: the lock in place mechanism can get stuck together a bit when printing, though all it takes is a little post processing in the form of lightly pressing a sharp object into the gaps till it comes loose. Happy printing!
