The sump’s relentless flooding and corrosive mists forced the inhabitants to construct their homes on precarious stilts, scavenged from rusted steel beams and discarded machinery. Over generations, the settlement grew into a sophisticated network of elevated platforms, bridges, and buildings, earning its nickname: the Stilt Sprawl. A History of Resilience The Kaliz Sector was originally a haven for those fleeing from gang wars. Its isolation and dangerous proximity to the sump made it undesirable to all but the most desperate. Early settlers found a tenuous way of life, harvesting sump shrimp and salvaging wreckage from the toxic tides. Over time, trade with other parts of the undercity brought a degree of stability, and more people were attracted to the location, able to use it as a base to hunt monsters in the Sumps. Kaliz is especially attractive to pirate gangs! Life in the Stilt Sprawl Despite the prosperity, life is harsh in Kaliz. The air is thick with noxious fumes that corrode both metal and flesh. Residents wear patchwork respirators and goggles, trading for filters and parts to keep the poison at bay. Periodic floods sweep through the Sector, dissolving weaker structures and carrying off anything not bolted down. Entire families have vanished overnight, their homes claimed by the ever-encroaching waters. Crime also thrives in the Stilts, its labyrinthine layout perfect for smuggling and illicit deals. The bridges and platforms serve as neutral grounds for gang negotiations, where disputes are often settled with blood. Those who live here learn quickly to step lightly; the wrong move can mean plummeting into the sump and certain death! An Economy Built on Scavenging and Trade The waters beneath Kaliz teem with mutated sump shrimp and other grotesque creatures, prized by the richer citizens of the undercity for their rarity and supposed medicinal properties. Pirates brave the toxic tides in mighty rafts like the Scumrider to haul in these hazardous delicacies. Scrap divers also play a crucial role. They risk their lives to dredge up relics from the sump, ranging from valuable machinery to ancient tech, all of which fetch high prices in the upper hives. Workshops dot the sprawl, where skilled tinkerers repurpose salvaged parts into weapons, tools, or filtration systems. The Spirit of the Stilt Sprawl Despite its dangers, the Kaliz Sector has a spirit of defiance. Its residents, hardened by years of survival, cling to life with a stubborn resilience. The Stilts remain a place of opportunity and peril, where fortunes can be made or lost in an instant. For those who call it home, the Kaliz Sector is more than just a place to live—it’s proof that life can cling to the most precarious of perches.
