Marble over life-size bust of emperor Claudius. The style of the hair is cropped above the forehead unlike the earlier Julio-Claudian examples. The head had originally been worked to be inserted into a statue. The air is only picked as a rough surface, for the addition of hair in stucco, perhaps in a second phase, but the surface of the face appears untouched since it was first carved. AD 41-54
