In Bestiaries (books dedicated to animals), the owl is described as a blind bird that cannot see in daylight. In the Middle Ages, it often symbolises the blindness of the Jewish people who refused to recognise Jesus Christ as the Messiah as foretold by the Prophets. The reverse side features two affronted rams. A dog and fish are found on each of the respective sides.
