They regulate the march. The cadence they produce keeps the procession together when vision fails and pain threatens to scatter it. In battle, these sounds and signs become anchors. The banner shows where the vow still advances. The tolling and scraping carry through smoke and bombardment, guiding the leprous faithful when orders cannot be heard and sight has abandoned them.
