This piece is part of a larger series of pieces that date back to 1900 onwards and that depict hands in different contexts. In this specific piece, the two hands meet and leave a little space in the middle which allows us to see an object hidden in-between. The two hands belong to two different people, they are two right hands. Also, the hands are close enough to touch through their fingertips but at the same time the “secret” object is keeping them apart forever. This work of art, is considered a companion piece to “The Cathedral” which shows a very similar structure: two right hands meeting and leaving a space in the middle allowing some “air” to the sculpture. Emptiness and space has always been of essential importance to Rodin, it is in fact represented in many of his compositions such as this one.
