Model Description:This download contains a highly detailed model of a Panzer II AusF J, the armored breakthrough version of the Panzer II. Documentation and references for the real vehicle were rigorously studied to make the model as geometrically accurate as possible, except in the cases where printability would have to be sacrificed (such as the fender thickness). Historical Description:The Panzer II was originally designed as a stopgap tank for the German army during World War 2, meant to tie over panzer divisions while larger tanks were being developed. The vehicle was the most prevalent German tank at the beginning of the war; however, it would be replaced by the Panzer III and IV tanks shortly after. By 1942 the vehicle was almost entirely taken out of frontline service. The vehicle generally had lackluster armor, as at the time of its development resistance to small arms was the biggest consideration. All Panzer II variants mounted a 20mm autocannon of some variety, with earlier models using the KwK 30, while later versions upgraded to the KwK 38. The Panzer II AusF J is very distinct from previous versions, both in terms of role and design. The vehicle plays a role more akin to a heavy tank rather than the reconnaissance role characteristic of late Panzer II variants. The vehicle had its armor thickened to 80mm (~3") on the front and 50mm (~2") on the sides and rear. The vehicle mounted the 2cm KwK 38 autocannon, an upgrade from the KwK 30 found on the early Panzer IIs. The vehicle is visually very similar to the Panzer I AusF F, albeit wider to accommodate the larger turret and 2cm cannon. The vehicle had layered wheels utilizing torsion bar suspension to help distribute the weight of the vehicle, which was considerably higher than other variants due to the armor. In Armored Advance:In armored advance the Panzer II AusF J is an infantry support tank, with very limiting anti-tank utility. The vehicle's armor is sufficient to handle lighter AT weaponry, particularly at range. Furthermore, the vehicle has a higher health pool allowing it to survive longer. Unlike early Panzer II versions, the vehicle mounts the 2cm KwK 38 autocannon which is a minor upgrade to the KwK 30 but still will not be able to damage much to armored opponents. It is, however, very potent at knocking out unarmored units. Overall, the vehicle is best used to protect infantry with its wide footprint and augment their firepower against opposing infantry and light vehicles.
