The young man holds a strigil (scraper for cleaning the skin after exercise) in his right hand and the cords of an aryballos (small vase of perfumed oil), now missing, in his left. At his side, a servant holds the leashes of two greyhounds. The image sums up the ideal young Athenian citizen (ephebos), who distinguished himself in sport (evoked here by the strigil and aryballos) and the hunt (alluded to by the dogs).
