The figure of the Caryatid reminds of the young women whose task was bringing gifts during a sacred ceremony or sacrifices.The figure of the Caryatid was often used as architectural piece, most likely as a column given the shape of their body and arms.This specific Caryatid coming from the Torlonia collection, wears long drapes adorned with a Medusa shaped medallion on the chest. The sculpture was built to adorrn an architectural complex built around 50 AC.
