Tanghulu, also known as bingtanghulu, is called tangdun'er in Tianjin and tangqiu in Fengyang, Anhui. Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese snack that originated in the Southern Song Dynasty. It is made by skewering wild fruits with bamboo skewers and then dipping them in maltose syrup. The syrup quickly hardens in the wind. It is a common winter snack in northern China, usually made with hawthorn berries, and the syrup freezes solid. It is both sour and sweet, and very cold.
