Model Description:This download contains a highly detailed model of the main production variant of the SU-76, the SU-76M, featuring the open fighting compartment (with interior) that differentiates it from early production models. Documentation and references for the real vehicle were rigorously studied to make the model as geometrically accurate as possible, except in the cases where printability would have to be sacrificed (such as the fender thickness). The model is more fragile than most files due to the nature of the open crew compartment with thin walls, however with proper handling the model should still be durable enough to be used. Historical Description:The SU-76M was the later evolution of the SU-76 Tank Destroyer, designed by the Soviet Union as a cheap infantry support vehicle. The vehicle was found to be able to engage hostile armor in addition to fortifications. The SU-76M was the most common version of the vehicle to see production and was the most-produced Soviet armored vehicle throughout the war, despite being somewhat lesser known than the T-34 and KV-1 tanks. With around 15,000 being produced overall. The SU-76M was superficially similar to the initial SU-76 model, featuring the same cannon and similar layout, as well as being derived from the T-70 tank. The SU-76M did have several key changes from the SU-76 however, the most obvious being the open-casemate configuration. Perhaps the most significant internal change was the restructuring of the engine system though, which proved to significantly improve reliability and performance. In Armored Advance:In armored advance the SU-76M provides a cheap multi-role cannon, which has the accurate keyword unlike the regular SU-76, albeit at a slight cost premium. The armor is insufficient to stop all but the weakest of guns. However, the cannon is capable of dealing with many early war units effectively as well as having anti-infantry firepower with HE shells, to allow the vehicle to run its historical role as an infantry support weapon. The vehicle does not possess the same AT prowess as other Soviet tank destroyers, such as the SU-85, however it is cheaper and makes up for some lack of AT firepower with the ability to efficiently deal with infantry and other soft targets.
