This neoclassical bust celebrates the German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller. Once a popular fixture in libraries and academic spaces, such busts symbolised reverence for literary genius and intellectual ideals. Dannecker, a close friend of Schiller, captured his likeness with striking realism and dignity. By 1937, this particular bust had left the realm of scholarly admiration and was in an office store. Its journey reflects changing cultural values and the shifting role of portrait busts at the University of Leeds.
