Richard Fisher founded a York-based sculptural workshop in the eighteenth century. His family business spanned over 150 years, producing chimneypieces and church memorials for Yorkshire’s gentry. Joseph Nollekens was a leading British sculptor of the late eighteenth century. He trained in London and Rome and was known for his neoclassical portrait busts. Nollekens’ posthumous bust of William Pitt, Britain’s youngest Prime Minister, is among his most acclaimed works. Nollekens sculpted the portrait from a death mask and his studio reproduced it many times. The first version, carved in 1806, is at Dalmeny House near Edinburgh. Gifted by Dorothy Una Ratcliffe in 1952–53, it belonged to her uncle-in-law, Lord Brotherton, who displayed it at Roundhay Hall.
