Recorded as a portrait of George VI as Prince Regent, this bust is thought to be a copy after Joseph Nollekens. Renowned for his neoclassical style, Nollekens sculpted lifelike portrait busts that captured the character and status of his sitters. His refined technique and attention to detail made him one of Britain’s most celebrated sculptors. During his reign George IV patronised the arts, shaping the Regency era’s distinctive style. Though politically divisive, he championed culture and architecture. This portrait used to stand at the entrance of the Brotherton Library, a gift from Dorothy Una Ratcliffe in 1952–53. She inherited it from her uncle-in-law, Lord Brotherton, who had displayed it at Roundhay Hall as part of his collection since at least 1926.
